Computer Science Student

I like building things that actually get used: apps, tools, and hands-on projects.

I'm Benjamin Davis, a third-year Computer Science student at Western University, working toward IT support and systems roles. This site is part portfolio, part project journal: working software, solar hardware, 3D prints, games, and whatever else I'm currently curious about.

About Me

The short version.

How I Work

I'm drawn to the practical side of computer science: troubleshooting problems, setting up systems, and turning messy information into something organized and usable. Most of my projects start with a real problem. My family's business needed an inventory system, so I built one. Our solar panel idea needed control software, so I built that too.

Where I'm Headed

I'm aiming for IT support, troubleshooting, and systems-related work. Alongside school, I'm working through the CompTIA A+ and Google IT Support certifications, and using projects like my home server plans to get more hands-on with storage, networking, and infrastructure.

The Hobby Side

Half of this site is hobbies: 3D printing, game development, Blender, drawing, and photography.

Experience

Customer-facing work, organization, and practical day-to-day responsibility.

April 2024 - Present

Garden Centre / Parts Associate - Canadian Tire Caledonia and Bancroft

Worked in a fast-paced retail environment helping customers, supporting multiple departments, answering questions, organizing inventory, and handling tasks independently. The role built a lot of practical experience around reliability, problem-solving, communication, and keeping things organized.

2018 - 2021

Worker - Davis Lawn Care

Managed customer-facing work, handled multiple jobs efficiently, and learned how to work consistently, communicate clearly, and maintain quality standards.

Practical Skills

Tools and habits I use regularly.

Git & GitHub

Comfortable using Git from the command line for pull, add, commit, and push workflows.

Troubleshooting Mindset

Patient, organized problem-solving with an interest in support, setup, and system issues.

Databases

Coursework and project interest in SQL-backed tools and information management.

Web Apps

Built two working React + Tailwind dashboards (solar monitoring and business inventory), plus this site.

Documentation

Comfortable writing project notes, walkthroughs, and structured technical explanations.

Customer Communication

Experience helping people directly, answering questions, and working through practical issues.

Certifications In Progress

What I'm studying alongside school to back up the hands-on experience.

CompTIA A+

IT support fundamentals: hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting, networking basics, and security.

In Progress

Google IT Support

Troubleshooting, customer support, networking, system administration, and day-to-day support workflows.

In Progress

CompTIA Network+

Deeper networking: infrastructure, IP addressing, routing, wireless, and network security.
